Fallout 4 is dead good, to paraphrase our Matt in his rather more extensive and nuanced review. But some of its earliest players have found bugs besides radroaches – and others have seen more than Boston’s infrastructure crash.
Here’s where we’re collecting all of the major issues as they’re reported, as well as their potential fixes and workarounds.
Update 16th Nov, 2015:A game-breaking bug has been discovered that is causing crashes on every platform.
If you’re planning a trip to the area around Monsignor Plaza– and you probably will at some point, since it’s an area relevant to several quests – then you might be in for a bit of bother. Players are reporting CTDs absent error messages when entering the area. Apparently the Event Viewer doesn’t show the error, either. It’s a bit tricky to pin point the issue, and it doesn’t seem to be related to quests sending you to the area, either.
A bug of this scale will hopefully be a priority for Bethesda.
Original Story 10th Nov, 2015:Crashes to desktop are frequent offenders so far, but with a bit of luck we won’t have to explain them away as wasteland anomalies this time. The most common culprit seems to be a GPU driver conflict – solved by making a clean install of the latest drivers. Nvidia users in particular are advised to download the latest GeForce driver, 358.91 WHQL (there’s another version for Windows 10 users).
Beyond that, some have reported that Nvidia’s ‘Streamer Service’ for the SHIELD, which comes as part of their GeForce Experience software, has been behind a certain amount of poor performance and crashing. You can turn it off by following the instructions over on the Bethesda forums. If you’re still suffering general stuttering issues, it might be worth disabling V-sync and running in full screen, rather than windowed mode.
A portion of Fallout 4’s playerbase hasn’t made it past the main menu, thanks to a lack of mouse input. In those cases, it seems the game is detecting a controller by default. Some have fixed the problem simply by removing any gamepads they might have plugged in; others have navigated to Options using a controller and switched back mouse control manually.
That doesn’t help those without gamepads, of course. Steam forumites have reported success in editing fallout4prefs.ini – found under Documents/My Games/Fallout 4 – so that it reads bGamepadEnable=0 rather than bGamepadEnable=1. If you use Ds3Service’s emulation drivers to get a PlayStation pad working, however, that might be your problem – in which case you’ll need to dive into Task Manager and stop the Ds3 process.
Sat staring at an unwelcome message that reads ‘Fallout 4 has stopped working’? You’ll want to try launching the game in compatibility mode. Gamunation suggest selecting either the Vista SP2 or XP SP3 compatibility option under the Fallout 4 executable’s properties.

If you’re facing a disk write error, meanwhile, Gamunation recommend the following workaround:
- Click Start > (My) Computer
- Locate the hard drive Steam is installed on. By default, this is C:
- Right-click this drive and select Properties.
- Click the Tools tab.
- In the Error-checking category, click Check now…
- In the dialog that appears, check “Automatically fix file system errors” and “Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.”
- Click Start.
- After completing the scan, restart your PC and run the game.
Finally, and possibly most importantly, Fallout 4 does not support 32-bit operating systems. It’s a cruel and unbending truth that you ought to be aware of.

I think I mentioned in one of my earlier posts that I have update the sound driver, without it making a difference. If not, apologies. I try to include as much detail as possible in my replies. I had completely overlooked the motherboard drivers though, so after kicking myself for a while I update them and tested the game again. Crash.
I have an ASUS P5N-D motherboard, and the temperature and fan settings are in Hardware Monitor. Oddly, the temps there are on average 15-20 degrees higher than what HWMonitor and Speccy say they are immediately after crash, so I updated my BIOS to version 1401 (latest) for good measure. As for my start-up directory, the only thing that loads aside from windows processes are Avast and RivaTuner. RivaTuner has only been a part of things for a few days, and was added to keep the GPU fan on 100% at all times, in case it was the card that was over-heating.
I don't have a spare PSU laying around, and for obvious reasons I'm a bit reluctant to purchase one just to troubleshoot the only game that has problems on my system. I'm open to suggestions on how to test my current PSU.
i am asking this out of curiosity to see what seems to be the normal/average amount of time before the game it crashes/freezes for people and what system was it for
if it cashes/freezes for you

for me it was a day two ago freezing at some were between 1-25 minuets from when i load the game
some may call that unplayable but i call it very annoying and an immersion killer
but that was being caused by mods(obviously my system is the pc)

I have some issues with the game just hard crashing (freezes up, can't alt-tab out or anything, need to restart), also sometimes when I fast traveled it'd crash (turned off autosaves and that seemed to help). A lot of the time the game will freeze up but I'll get a FalloutNV.exe has stopped working popup.

It seems to crash at random, nothing seems to tip it off or cause it (besides the fast travel crashes which seem to be fixed). I am using 4GBNV and NVSE, using the 4GB launcher that allows NVSE to be allowed as well.

Hello everyone! I apologize for not making this post sooner. I have been meaning to, but have been very busy with work lately.
Just a heads up, please follow the main pinned thread about fixing Fallout 3 first before attempting this! The multicore fix and FOSE are essential for the following to work.
Have you tried to get Fallout 3 GOTY running on Windows 10 with no success? Does your game keep crashing every 5-10 minutes or so for no apparent reason?
I had this problem two weeks ago and it was frustrating to say the least. However, after a lot of research I think the problem has been isolated by the Nexus community…and the problem is Fallout Stutter Remover.
After going through the forums on Nexus, I was not the only one having issues with Fallout Stutter Remover. In fact, many people mentioned that Fallout Stutter Remover worked great up until recently. Come to find out that the crashing may have been caused by recent Windows updates and FSR (Fallout Stutter Remover) not meshing well.
So, if you are using Fallout Script Extender aka FOSE (which I highly recommend you use), and Fallout Stutter Remover and are still experiencing crashing, this is what I recommend trying. Again, this may not work for everyone. Hell, it might not help anyone. However, this fixed the crashing issue for me on Windows 10 Home Edition. I have played for about 5 hours and have not experienced a crash (which is actually a first for me).
1) With FOSE and FSR installed, open your Fallout 3 goty folder. (Usually found in C:SteamLibrarysteamappscommonFallout 3 goty). This will depend on where you installed the game of course.
2) Next, navigate to the following: DataFOSEpluginssr_Fallout_Stutter_Remover.ini
3) IMPORTANT – Make a backup of sr_Fallout_Stutter_Remover.ini file and put it in a different directory. This is important because if the fix does not work for you, you will be able to go back to your default file for your previous settings.
3) Open up the .ini with Notepad or Notepad ++.
4) Now, you will need to find and change these two lines in the file sr_Fallout_Stutter_Remover.ini :
”
”
bHookCriticalSections = 1
bHookLightCriticalSections = 1
bHookLightCriticalSections = 1
To :
bHookCriticalSections = 0
bHookLightCriticalSections = 0
bHookLightCriticalSections = 0
(These two lines should be very close to the top, right when you open up the file.)
Unfortunately, changing these 2 lines makes stuttering when loading new cells reappear, limiting the benefits of this mod. The same happens with all versions I tried, 4.0.7, 4.1.26 and 4.1.36.

If you can tolerate a very small stutter when loading new areas of the map, the game has been rock solid stable for me.
5) Save the file.
6) Close Notepad.
7) Enjoy a stable Fallout 3! I hope this fix works for you guys as it has helped me.
If this has helped you, let me know so that we can spread the word. Fallout 3 is one of my favorite games of all time, and I want people to experience it. However, it is not fun for anyone to load up the game and have it crash every few minutes. If you need more tips, I recommend checking out the Nexus website; look up Fallout Stutter Remover, and read the posts found in the Posts section.
Thank you all for your time!
